PIL Program: Increasing the Student Achievement by Utilizing the SAS to Integrate STEM into Career and Technical Education
 
 
 TARGET AUDIENCE:      Career and Technical Education Administrators, Coaches and Instructors
 
 DATES/LOCATIONS:      November 1 (Initial Session) – Holiday Inn, New Cumberland
                                               November 3 (Initial Session) – Holiday Inn, Monroeville
 
          REQUIRED FOR:      Cohort II schools must send 1 to 3 participants at no cost
                                              
DESCRIPTION
The purpose of this PIL program is to provide Career and Technical Education (CTE) leaders with the knowledge and skills to work with teachers to improve the achievement of CTE students on the STEM standards through curriculum integration with career and technical education. The 40-hour program will include seven hours of instruction during the initial session, four hours of on-line instruction, 25 hours of job-embedded assignments, and a four-hour culminating session. The program is designed to provide participants with the skills to utilize the SAS to integrate STEM competencies into CTE that will result in improved CTE student achievement on the STEM standards and on end-of-program occupational assessments.
 
Participants will develop an understanding of the Pennsylvania SAS and the Pennsylvania STEM standards. Additionally, participants will participate in multiple discussions and creative sessions to utilize SAS and STEM to create integrated learning modules with selected CTE areas. Participants will learn how to create activities, projects, and problems as components of learning modules that integrate STEM into CTE.
 
At the conclusion of the PIL, participants should be able to:
·         Demonstrate a complete understanding of the SAS
·         Demonstrate a complete understanding of the STEM standards
·         Develop strategies for applying SAS to CTE
·         Develop strategies for linking CTE curriculum to STEM standards through activities, projects, and problems
·         Complete all components of the STEM/CTE Learning Modules
·         Conduct an evaluation of STEM/CTE Learning Modules
·         Use assessment data to identify student achievement of CTE and STEM standards though the Learning Modules
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Act 45 and 48 Credits
 
This PIL is approved for Act 45 credit for those who are required to earn PIL credits. It is also approved for regular Act 48 credits for those who are not required to earn Act 45 credits. Act 45 and 48 credits will be awarded upon completion of the entire program.

November 3 (Initial Session) – Holiday Inn, Monroeville – Time 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM
 
 
Registration
 
PACTA is encouraging team participation in this PIL. The cost for the first registrant from a school is $400, the second $325 and the third $300. The charge for additional registrants is $300. The registration fee covers the entire 40-hour course. 
 
 
 
 
Registrants from Schools Participating in the PDE Technical Assistance Project
 
A number of PACTA member schools are participating in the Bureau of Career and Technical Education’s Technical Assistance Program (TAP). This PIL is a required component of that program. TAP Cohort II schools may send up to three individuals to this PIL at no cost for the registration fee to the school. PDE will pay the registration fee.
