Description
The Pennsylvania Association of Career and Technical Administrators (PACTA) has received approval from the Pennsylvania Department of Education to offer a Pennsylvania Inspired Leadership (PIL) program for administrators entitled New Director Academy: Improving CTE Student Achievement through Excellence in Instructional Coaching and Mentoring. The purpose of this PIL program is to provide Career and Technical Center leaders with the knowledge and skills to work with teachers to develop an Instructional Coaching Plan to improve instruction and student achievement in CTE. The 35-hour program will include at least 17 hours of face to face instruction as well as 18 hours of job-embedded assignments. The program will incorporate on-line technical assistance through www.pactatopics.org to participants throughout the program. The program is designed to provide participants with the skills to work with instructors to create an Instructional Coaching Plan that will result in measurable instructional improvement and improvement in CTE student achievement. Specifically, the participant will learn how to implement the ten roles of an effective instructional coach and rely upon formative and summative student achievement data in math, reading, and CTE programs to improve instruction through coaching.
Participants will be able to demonstrate the ten roles of an effective instructional coach and rely upon those roles to improve instruction. Additionally, participants will understand how to incorporate data into their coaching efforts to create a culture of teaching and learning among the instructional staff. Improved student learning will be measured by end of course occupational assessments in CTE plus additional assessments in math and reading in each CTE program.
At the conclusion of the program, participants should be able to: effectively collaborate with CTE teachers on developing the Instructional Coaching Plan; be able to define and apply the ten roles of an effective coach as a part of the Instructional Coaching Plan; employ the appropriate instructional coaching strategies based on teacher and student needs; utilize student achievement data (formative and summative) to collaboratively design and adjust the Instructional Coaching Plan; create instructional interventions based on observations, walk-throughs, and instructional/ student achievement data analysis; utilize the Instructional Coaching Plan to select the most effective teaching strategies to meet teacher goals and student achievement targets; provide accurate and effective feedback to instructors based on observations, student achievement data, and 360 degree student feedback; and assess the effectiveness of the Instructional Coaching Plan and make modifications as needed.
Additional topics of importance to new directors such as budgeting and board/superintendent relations will also be covered. Participants will also be assigned, if they so desire, an experienced director mentor to work with them over the next year.
